Nissan Repair: 1996 nissan sentra gxe, nissan sentra gxe, tension bolt

Question
QUESTION: the drive belt that goes around the power steering, water, and crankshaft pulleys broke. I bought a new belt, but i can't seem to get it on. I tried the adjustment bolt to loosen the tension. nothing seems to work. how do I get the new belt on?

ANSWER: Hi Randy -

Are you saying that even though you have loosened and moved the tensioner all the way, the belt is still not fitting?

If so, then try comparing the old and the new belt to ensure it is the same size.

Please let me know

QUESTION: Calvin yes I have adjusted the tension bolt and the belt is still not fitting. I don't have the old belt because it broke. I did check with the auto parts store where I bought the new belt and they confirmed that it is the right belt. I don't know what to try next.

QUESTION: Hey Calvin I am attaching an image of what type of system I have. It is the upper right setup. Like I said earlier I was able to get the alternator belt on, but i am struggling with the outer belt. Is there something else I need to do to move the three pulleys close together?

Answer
Hi Randy -

Thanks for the diagram. If the idler pulley is at the maximum adjustment as far as looseness to put the belt on, then there is nothing else that can be loosened to bring the pulleys closer. If the belt is pretty close to going on, you can "help" it on by putting it halfway on the pulley, and manually turning the engine until the belt snaps on. Then you can make your final adjustment by tightening the idler pulley.

If the belt is too small to fit halfway on the pulley, I would return it and get the next larger size.

Hope this helps -
