Nissan Repair: 07 Altima runs rough, mass airflow sensor, snails pace

Question
I own a 07 Altima, (4 cylinder, automatic cvt transmission), Yesterday, my dad borrowed my car and a downpour occured. He drove through water that was deeper than he expected. The water did not rise above the hood. He said he continued to drive it for about 45 mins and all was well. Once he parked and then came back out to drive off again about an hour later, it was running very rough and occasionally jerking badly. He says most of the time it doesn't happen until he is going above 45 mph. I took it out today and had problems as soon as I backed out of the parking spot. It jerks and wont accelerate except at a snails pace. Then there might not be any more problems for a few more streets. Then you can feel it shifting gears again. Or it wont speed up. I have no idea what to do and I am afraid if I take it to the dealership before some consultation I am going to get ripped off. I also seem to have some sort of burnt liquid odor coming from under my hood. No smoke, no visible leaks, no check engine light and no other problems. Please help me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Answer
Jenifer,

Check the oil for water.  Pull the dipstick.  The oil will look like coffee with creamer from water contamination and will be over full.  If this is the case change the oil!  Do not wait as engine damage can result.  If there is water in the oil have the transmission checked for water too.  Lastly, if the mass airflow sensor was contaminated with water it could have shorted and this would be the cause for the rough running.  Email me back and let me know what you find.
