Nissan Repair: Nissan Transmission, crank angle sensor, 2003 nissan altima

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5SL, what kind of automatic transmission fluid should i use? would a regular transmission fluid work? also how much fluid am i suppose to put in when changing the transmission fluid? do you know where the water pump is located on the car also?

ANSWER: Frank,

Dextron III is the fluid of choice for the transmission.  Four to five quarts is used to change the fluid.  The torque converter holds much more but you can only get to what is in the transmission.  You replace the gasket and filter and put in four quarts.  Then, start the car and shift through all gears slowly, foot on the brake.  On a lever surface you check the fluid and add until it is on the full mark of the dip stick.

The water pump is on the passenger side of the engine.  Look at the belts and the one pulley, center, on top of the engine, is the water pump.

QUESTION: thx for the help so far, do i have to use dexron transmission fluid? those are expensive and since i have to do 4-5 quarts. can i just use any regular transmission fluid and have that work just as good?

ANSWER: Frank,

You will have to use Nissan fluid or Dextron.  The other types are too thick to work properly with your transmission.

QUESTION: thanks for the help so far, ive been told that my crank sensor needs replacing because engine light is on and it takes awhile for car to start. is it possible for me to replace it myself? if so how would i be able to do that

Answer
Frank,

You can change the crank angle sensor yourself.  It is an easy job with a 10 millimeter bolt holding it on.  Look at the crank and it is the magnetic sensor at the harmonic ballancer.  Purchase the part from courtesynissan.com or rockauto.com and you will see what you are going to change.
