Nissan Repair: ignition problems, spot nissan, power transistor

Question
My 85 300XZ non turbo just quit running on the interstate.  It would not start.  I have a factory service manual and I do my own repairs if possible.  The multiple codes indicated crank angle senor.  I purchased a used distributor.  The car would not start with the distributor at TDC #1 but when the distributor was turned to retard the spark at the first single crank mark (approx. 40 degrees) it started right up and ran fine but with no power.  As soon as I try to turn the distributor to 20 degrees before top dead center, it will just barely run and will not gain rpms. I've taken the distributor out 3 times and followed the book but no success.  I'm stumped.  The car used run great but has considerable rust so I don't want to put a fortune in it.

The part # on the distributor is the same as the parts book called for but the wiring harnesses did not match so I had to pot in a connector.  The codes are now only a 23 and the book doesn't give me enough to know what's happening.

Could it be the wrong distributor?  Power transistor or coil? Engine computer?

I'm stumped.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Answer
Leonard,

You are going to have to base time the engine and make sure it is on top dead center.  Then, install the distributor.  Then, make sure the wires are in the correct spot.  Nissan uses a drive dog so it should only go in on top or 180 degrees out.  I am sure the distributor is not the problem and it is only a matter of getting things set.  Also, if this fails be sure to pull the timing cover on top and check the cams against top dead center on the crank.  Email me back if you need more.  If it ran 40 degrees out I would put it back and start from there and then look to see where the wires are plugged into the cap.
