If the valve body is not contaminated with debris then the shift computer is the usual suspect.

QUESTION: hey thanks for that, i thought it might be something like what you have said, i had a look in the fuse box!!! hopeful thinking maybe, and then there is under the bonnet, but nothing is marked, could yoyu please tell me where the shift computer is. Thanks in advance, shane

ANSWER: Shane,

If yours is like the Nissan cars sold in the United States the shift computer is on the transmission.  But, after reviewing your trouble is probably with the solenoids or their connections.  The transmission will lock itself into third gear to protect itself.  You need a transmission shop, with a scanner, to read the transmission codes.  The lockup torque converter has a connection that it has to make and also, there is a sensor that reads engine vacuum to allow the torque converter to apply.  Conditions for this are the car has to be operating temperature and no or a light load on the engine.  High engine vacuum and the lockup torque converter will apply.  .

QUESTION: I can not find anything that would look like a computer that is attached to the transmission its self. The solinoid pack that I refitted, had the electrical fittings plugged in well, and I believe that they are ok. Before I take the car off to a transmission shop, and taking into account the information that you have forwarded me, will be saving me time, trouble andmoney!!! I would really like to locate this shift computer, as  mentioned previousley. Much regards, and thanks shane

Answer
Shane,

On the Maxima, in the United States, it is a long black box.  About the size of a box of matches and eight inches long.  The harness that comes out of the transmission has this as the first thing it hits before the harness goes up to the car.
