Nissan Repair: How to change Rear wheel bearings on a 92 Nissan Pulsar N14, rear wheel bearings, nissan nx

Question
Hey there, I want to change the rear wheel bearings on my car because they are quite noisy/rumbling when driving. Can you please walk me through how to do it ? I have a fair idea just would like some extra info on the process. It has the rear drum brake hub assembly and was just wondering how to do it correctly ?
Thanks
Tom

Answer
Tom,

Jack up the car and support it.

Remove the tire and then the center cap on the hub.  Remove the cotter pin, nut retainer, nut and washer and pull the drum off.  You might have to back off the automatic adjusters on the drums to get them off.  The adjuster access is on the backing plate.  A small screwdriver to hold the locking mechanism off while you turn the adjuster to loosen the nut will back off the shoes allowing the drum off.  Once the drum is off you can then gain access to the bearings and races.  You will have to drive the races off to install new ones.
When you reinstall be sure to get a new dust seal and be sure not to over tighten the nut.  Use a new cotter pin too.  Tighten the nut and spin the drum as you do.  Once the drum starts slowing down, you feel it getting harder to spin, stop.  If you over tighten the nut you will burn out the new bearings.  Also, be sure to pack the new bearings with a quality grease prior to installing them.
