Nissan Repair: 1994 Sentra Problem, nissan sentra, combustion chamber

Question
I have a 1994 Nissan Sentra XE 1.6L with a auto trans. Here is my problem. I don't know if the outside temp. has anything to do with this problem. The problem has never happened on city street only on the freeway at speeds over 50mph.

I drive to work at 4am and travel about 20 miles. Maybe once or sometimes it won't happen, but my check engine light comes on. If I keep driving the light will turn off in about 20 seconds or so. Now when I drive home at about 2 pm the light will go on and off about 5 times. If I press down on the gas and get the car to shift down and get the rpm's up the light will turn off right away once the car shifts back to the higher gear. I replaced the O2 sensor and that didn't help.

I did read how to retrieve the trouble codes and did that. It comes out with code 32-egr sensor circuit. What should I replace? I have a smog due in a few weeks and want to make sure the car will pass. Thanks....

Answer
Jeremy,

Sounds like the EGR and related sensor need to be replaced.  The EGR is the exhaust reciculation valve and what it does is mix exhaust back into the intake to cool down the combustion chamber.  But, if it hangs when you are at a steady state driving or when you are at idle the light will come on and the car will run a little rough and in some cases even die.  I would replace it and reset the code and you should be done.
