Nissan Repair: 1997 Nissan Altima, nissan altima, wheel bearing

Question
QUESTION: I just started getting a squeaking sound (maybe metal on metal) from the front passenger tire area.  It only starts when I go above 40mph and stops as soon as I go below 40mph.  The sound can only be heard when the passenger front window is down.

ANSWER: Hi Michael -

Can you tell me if the noise goes away or still remains when you press the brake?

Is it a high pitch squeak, or lower?

Let me know -

QUESTION: Hi Calvi

It is a high pitch squeak and remains when I press the break.  I took it to a mechanic yesterday and he checked the brakes, suspension.  He said it might be the wheel bearing but even that seemed to be ok.  So after taking it to him he couldn't find the problem and it still squeaks.

Answer
Hi Michael -

Can you tell me how the mechanic checked the bearing? This is a hub bearing that has to be pressed out. The best way to check it is to raise and place jackstands on the front of the vehicle, put it in gear so that the front wheels are spinning, and then get a mechanic's stethoscope (or long screwdriver) and listen to the hub where the bearing is. If there is any kind of rubbing sound, then the bearing needs replacement.

Hope this helps -
