Nissan Repair: Leak in 5 speed transmisson - Nissan Altima, nissan altima, independent garages

Question
I read your answer from a previous submitter.

At about 70K, I had the same problem with a leaky tranny.  At 190K, the problem has returned.  Value of the car is on the cusp of repair cost ($1400 at dealership), so I wonder if I could attempt this myself????

How about a local independant.  What would should I expect to pay? Any cheapie fix to give me another 20K of so?

The car is mechanically solid (except tranny), cold air, strong engine (no oil burning or leaking), excellent interior (survived two teenage girls through highschool).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
Robin,

A cheap alternative would be to remove the transmission yourself and have a shop press the old bearings off and the new ones on, making sure to set the pre-load.  You could drive the car another 190K.  This is just a problem with the transmission design and the car having so much power.  Check around at independent garages that do transmission work.  These are cheaper then the dealer and are just as good for mechanical service.  A cheap way out is to change the seal and drive it until it leaks again.  But, the looser the bearings get the sooner the seal fails again.
