Nissan Repair: repair, cam points, haynes manual

Question
where does the timing marks go on a 1995 nissan 4 cyl.  does the one on the crank set at 12 oclock and the one on the cam set at three

Answer
Ken,

This is sort of a pain since the one on the crank is supposed to point at zero.  Yes, you end up putting the cover on and balancer on to get the bearing of number one and the cam points at the dot and it is almost at three o'clock.  A Haynes Manual would do you good since it has photographs to show what I cannot here.  So, after you put the timing on number one at the crank you remove the blanacer and lower cover and then lace the belt on and line up the cam with the point and dot.  Set the tension, roll the engine over by hand on the crank after installing the cover and balancer and stop on number one and see that the cam still lines up.  If it does reassemble.  If not it is off a tooth.
