Nissan Repair: 2002 auto transmission question, torque converter clutch, haynes manual

Question
My 2002 frontier would not reverse when I put in "R". And "N" would go foward. Park is OK. The code on the engine light said , the torque converter failed clutch solenoid, blocked passage in transmission and open or short circuit condition. Also, 2nd gear incorrect ratio. Do you think I can just change the torque converter and that fix the problem? I don't really want to change the trans. if I don't have to. But I do where can get some more instruction how to replace the trans. Please give me more advise what I should do. Is it very difficult to take down the trans and replace a used one? My friend and I was thinking about doing it. What is your suggestion and advice. thanks!

Answer
Rick,

From the sounds of the codes you state the transmission is gone for.  I say this from personal experience with a failed torque converter clutch.  When this fails it usually plugs up ports in the transmission and other parts fail.  I would replace it given the information you have provided.  Cottman has been good to me on several rebuilds and I ahve had luck with used units from the wrecking yard.  Be certain you blow out the transmission cooler lines so trash from this transmission does not damage your replacement unit.  A Haynes Manual is good for instructions as is the factory service manual.  You can get the factory service manual on-line at nissantechinfo.com for a small fee.  Just signup and then find your manual and pay the $20 bucks to get access to download a .pdf of the manual.
