1996 nissan pathfinder rear axle seals leaking.when removing the rear axle shafts does the ring and pinion need to be removed ?

No, the ring and pinion does not need to be removed.  You might have to remove the cover to get to the bolt that holds the clip on.  I have not done one on yours.  So, take the back wheel off and then the drum and look for four bolts that hold the backing plate on.  If you remove the four bolts and the axle does not come off then the cover has to be removed to get to the bolt and clip.
