Nissan Repair: loosing pickup, cold start, fuel filter

Question
hi there

Thanks for the quick response. i mailed you yesterday about my nissan 1990 v6 3.0 5 speed (maxima) loosing its pickuup and you advised me to change the distributor.
after observing the symptom closely the problem of not getting the pickup is only on the initial stages like for the forst 10 min of my drive after that it drives like a dream . my mechanic says it should be the fuel filter and i was arguing with him  to change the distributor as you advised me .

do you think the fuel filter should be a problem it has 170 k and the tuneup was done at 90k after that i felt like i dont even need teh tuneup.

please help  i cant spend a lot ogf money with hit and trial methods. i know you are the best

Thanks

Answer
Raj,

If it is only for the first ten minutes then it is not the distributor.  The fuel filter should be replaced with the miles you indicate.  However, I do not think that is going to solve the problem.  If it is only for the first ten minutes then it is related to getting the car warm.  After that it is fine.  Then, I would be looking at the cold start circuit like the temperature sensor that feeds information to the computer to tell it to go into cold start mode.  Seems to me that that sensor could be bad and that would be a cheap fix.
