Nissan Repair: 97 Altima Suspension, strut bearings, center bolt

Question
When I go over bumps at slow speeds, below 30 or 40. My car makes a clunking noise on the drivers side. I had both half shafts replaced as the boots were cut and leaking grease but htis hasn't helped. My mechanic said it's the steering rack and not to worry about it but it doesn't happen when I'm turning. I could just be coasting in neutral and going over bumps the cars creaks and clunks on the driver side especially when braking. I read another response talking about the strut bearings. Is this something I could do my self? What am I looking for to see if they are the problem?

Thank You
Mike

Answer
Michael,

The strut bearing on the drivers side is making noise.  This was a condition that was quite common through 2000 on Nissan cars.  If you cannot stand the noise have the bearing replaced.  This is at the top of the strut tower and the strut has to be removed.  If you open the hood you can see the center bolt in the tower and the three around it.  It is what allows the car's front wheels to turn left and right.  It should be done by a shop since the job is quite involved.
