Nissan Repair: stalling problem, nissan maxima, great shape

hi There

 i have a nissan maxima V6 ,3.0,1990 with 170k.
the car was in great shape untill recently it triedto dieon me . the car runs and suddenly looses its pickup. some times when i bring to halt it tends to raise and fall raise and faall several times. sometime it starts and runs fine. some times it gives the problem in the begining when i shift the gear and ten runs fine.

  please help  me identify the problem. the mechanic says its not the O2 sensor(which i am suspecious about) checked for vaccume leags and ignition wires are al fine.

It is probably the distributor.  Nissan uses an optical shutter wheel under the cover at the bottom of the distributor.  There is an oil seal that keeps engine oil out.  If the seal fails and since yours is a 1990 it probably has.  The fix is to replace the distributor with a rebuilt unit.
