Nissan Repair: 1995 Nissan Pathfinder Speedometer, vehicle speed sensor, nissan pathfinder

Question
Von,
The speedometer on my 1995 Nissan Pathfinder has issues.  After starting the vehicle the needle will start to slowly creep up by itself.  Most of the time after it is put in gear (manual trans) the needle will correct itself and will work fine until about 50 mph when it freezes up and the check engine light comes on.  The needle will continue by itself until it reaches 100 mph.  After some time there it will correct itself and the check engine light goes out and it will work fine until the engine is shut off and started back up again.  Any thoughts?

Thank you for your time.  Eric

Answer
Eric,

I would replace the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission first to see if that corrects the problem.  If it does not the speedometer will have to be replaced.  Source one on-line or from a wrecking yard.  The reason the check engine light comes on is the computer picks up speed information at the cluster.  So, if the sender is bad or the speedometer is bad you will get a code.
