Nissan Repair: Hello Von, First, Thanks..., nissan sentra gxe, nissan sentra gxe 99

Question
Hello Von,

First, Thanks for yr time. I have Nissan Sentra GXE 99. My odometer and tripmeter stop working last week. Other instruments like Speedometer, fuel gauge are working normal..no issues. Please suggest what could be the reason.

I went to Nissan dealership. They are suggesting to replace cluster which is going to cost $390. Do we really need to repalce entire cluster or something else could be the reason. Please help.

If cluster replacement is the only choice..I checked on Internet for replacing cluster..few guys are charging $200 but I do not know how to take out cluster from car and thn how to install it back. PLEASE sugegst what is the best way.

Thanks again.

Answer
John,

You would be money ahead doing it yourself.  To take out the old one all you need to do is disconnect the battery and then get a short and long phillips screwdriver.  Take out all the screws that surround the trim and pull it out and you will see the four screws that hold the actual cluster in.  You will need to tilt the column all the way down.  You might have to take the two bolts out that hold the column to the dash for more room so you can get the cluster out.  When you pull it out you will have to disconnect the harness.  It is a squeeze on the connector and then pull out.  Installing the replacement is just reverse of the process.  Hook the battery back up and you are done.
