My 87 Nissan Pulsar starts fine but while driving at a short distance it will cut of while driving or if I reach a destination and turn it off it will not start.  After several hours of letting it sit it will start.  I never had this problem until my muffler fell off and had it replaced.  Since then I've had a new fuel filter replaced with no resolve, what else could it be.

Check the fuel pressure to make sure the fuel pump and relay are working properly.  If the fuel pressure checks good then check the distributor for oil on the optics.  The distributor uses an optical shutter wheel to give the computer information in order to fire the plugs.  If oil gets past the internal distributor seal it will fail.
