Nissan Repair: timeing belt replacement, haynes book, crankshaft

Question
i am changeing a broken timeing belt. the crankshaft has been turned but not camshafts ,what i need to know is what position should the crank& camshafts be in when i install the new belt? thank you

Answer
Brian,

Providing you have not bent any valves you move the crank to top dead center and then rotate the cams to where the timing marks are on the marks.  If you look at the front you will see a pointer and a line that have to be aligned.  Also, get a Nissan belt since they are marked with lines that aid in the process.  Get a Haynes book to show you photographs and be sure to replace the tensioner when you replace the belt.  Nothing is more annoying than having that bearing make noise a couple of months after you replace the belt.  Lastly, make sure you turn the engine over, by hand, using a breaker bar, on the crank, twice to make sure the marks continue to line up and then put it back together.  By that I mean the covers and accessories.  You do not want to have to do it more than once.
