Nissan Repair: Nissan Stanza Strut Noise, nissan stanza, 1988 nissan stanza

I am looking at a 1988 Nissan Stanza for sale. There is a knocking noise around the front right, the owner says it's a strut noise that is typical in older Nissans and not something to be concerned about. Is he correct?

He claims he had it checked out by a mechanic and that it should only cost about $50-75 to repair, if I decided to do so.

He is correct that it is no big deal but the cost would run about $150 since it will require an alignment after the strut bearing is replaced.  Yes, it is a really common problem but it is not a safety issue.  If the steering begins to grap it would need replacement but the noise is quite common.
