Nissan Repair: 95 Nissan Pickup Transmission, shaft bearing, nissan pickup

Question
Mr. Sudderth

I own a 95 Nissan Pickup.  Over the last couple of months there has been a noise (almost like a rattle) coming from underneath the vehicle that goes away once I engage the clutch.  I had the clutch and throwout bearing replaced thinking that this would correct the problem. I'm still hearing the noise and my guess is that it's coming from inside the transmission. Any ideas on what might be causing this noise and what the difficulties or cost of repair might be?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Jason,

Yes, the noise is coming from inside the transmission and it is probably the bearings.  Replace the grease with synthetic of the same grade and see if the noise lessens.  It is probably going to be the input shaft bearing and that would require removal of the transmission to replace it.  You are probably looking at $600 if it is just the bearing.  Remember the cost is really labor since the bearing is not too difficult to replace if you have a press.
