Yes, you need the sensor replaced to pass smog.  I would go to rockauto.com and see what they would charge for one since they are much less expensive on parts.  You can disconnect the battery terminal on the negative side for a few minutes to clear the code.  But, if you do this and not replace the part the computer will reset the code.  Now, you could do this and wait three days and if the light is not on you will pass.  But, it takes three days for the computer not to rat you out that you reset the code.
