Nissan Repair: 98 Sentra - Motor died on hwy, fuel pressure gauge, distributor cap

Question
Hello Von,
My 98 Sentra died on the highway. I thought maybe it was a timing belt/chain but took the distributor cap off and cranked and the rotor turns. (I believe it has a timing chain, would I be correct?) I know I am dealing with a fuel or spark problem and I am leaning toward spark. Could I rule out spark by putting paper clip in plug wire and holding 1/4 inch away from motor and then cranking? If there is no spark would it be the ignition module. If there is spark how would I diagnose the fuel issue? I believe it is injected. Thanks for the help

Answer
Bob,

You are on target.  If it is spark related replace the module and if it is fuel you will have no pressure.  I would replace the relay first and then if there was no pressure I would replace the pump.  Get a fuel pressure gauge for about $30 bucks and you can check the pressure with the key on.  You do not have to start or attempt to start the car to check the pressure.  Just turn the key to the run mode and check the pressure.
