Answer
If you always keep a quarter of a tank of gas in the car the fuel pump will last longer.  The pump is in the gas tank and if the tank gets below a quarter of a tank the pump runs hot.  I have seen pumps go for 15 years and those that fail sooner.  Since yours is a 1990 I would not bet on it lasting too much longer.  Something like another two to three years.

A car will go as long as you maintain it and replace parts.  This is up to you on how much you are willing to put into repairs until the cost is more than what a car payment works out to be.  When the cost and hassle is more than a new car payment is when you step off the sinking ship.

A timing belt lasts as long in both cases.  The thing that kills a timing belt is age and heat.  You are not getting any hotter either way that would make the belt last longer and it is a small price to pay to change it when you consider the cost of valves and pistons if it breaks.  Plus you get awsome mileage with a belt as opposed to a chain.

The car is 15 years old so enjoy it until it drops.  It is an excellent car but I step off them when they turn into a repair nightmare.  I say you have a few years to go before this happens.
