Nissan Repair: 1986 Nissan 300 ZX Accelleration Noise, universal joints, nissan 300

Question
Von,
This problem does occur when the vehicle is standing still as well.  When the shop took the driveshaft out that was supposedly when they checked the universal joint.  The ended up putting my original driveshaft back in when they realized that was not the problem.
I have not checked the motor mounts.  They asked about the clutch and if it had been recently repaired, so I believe that they checked it.  Thanks.

When accellerating to 1500 rpms vechicle begins
to rumble. Once above 1500 rpms it balances out a little but the vibration and rumble are still there.
Had a repair shop look at it and they thought it was the drive shaft, and removed it but the problem still persists.
The shop was unable to repair the vehicle.  They also checked the harmonic balancer and found nothing wrong with it.
No history of problem prior, no front end accidents.

Gerald,

The vibration only happens when the car is being driven?  If it only does it when you are driving then it is transmission/driveline related.  I would check the universal joints and motor mounts.  There is an off chance that the clutch cover could be loose.  But, I would check the motor mounts and the universal joints first.

Answer
Gerald,

Ok, lets go to the basics.  If the engine rumbles at around 1055 RPM it could be related to the intake hose from the air meter to the throttle body.  You see, when the engine revs up the hose has to stretch and if there is crack in the hose it will get unmetered air and sputter.  Also, if the plugs, wires, cap or rotor are defective the electrical energy could be dissipating and not getting to the plugs and that miss would cause the problem too.  Lastly, the distributor could have oil on the pickup and that could cause the problem too if the optics that tell the computer to fire the plugs.  Check it out and email me back.
