While both rear brake lights are operative, (they both work when the tail lights are off and the brake pedal is depressed), when the tail lights are on, the right rear brake light does not go on, when the brake pedal is depressed, but the left rear brake light does go on. What is the solution? Thanks in advance.

David,

This is going to crack you up.  One of the bulbs is burnt out.  That is, one of the filaments is burnt and laying on the other filament.  Take the back bulbs out and look at them in the light and you will see the filament that is laying across the other one touching.  It has happened to me more than once.

Thank you for your answer. I should have indicated before. I have swapped the right brake lite bulb with the left brake lite bulb, with the same results. The right brake lite, does not illuminate when the tail lights are on, while the left brake lite does. When the tail lights are off, both brake lites illuminate. Thanks in advance for your follow up answer. Much appreciated.

Answer
David,

Then is it the heeadlight switch.  Remove the steering column cover and take the two screws off that hold the switch on and replace it.  Take the old one apart and you will see where the contacts are defective.  They corrode and that is where the problem comes in.
