Question
transmision went out. i dont think that is it.rpm's go up but will not move.shift from park to drive the engine changes.i was driving and it had nothing, no sound of any kind ,like anything broke.it will go into neutral.i thought it might be the filter. do you know of a site that will explain how to get to and remove the filter.or any other input. thank you for your time

Answer
Pull the dipstick and smell the fluid.  If it smells burnt and not like raw fish you have a burnt up transmission.  You could have a plugged filter since most are polyester and when the fluid gets dirty the filter can plug.  It is just a matter of buying a filter kit and five quarts of transmission fluid.  Get a large pan to catch the fluid and then unbolt the pan.  The filter is just inside.  Replace the filter and reinstall the pan with the new gasket.  Do not use a sealer as this will clog the transmission.  Never use a sealant!  Can't say that enough on an automatic transmission.  Put three quarts of fluid in where the transmission dipstick is and then start the car.  In park pull the dipstick and check the level.  Add Fluid until the stick shows full.  It should take something like four or five quarts.  Take your time because if you overfill it you will trash the transmission.  Once the car shows full reinstall the dipstick and give it a drive.  If this did not work you probably have a blown torque converter.  The torque converter is the most likely suspect if it was not a clogged filter.  And, if you have not driven it too much the rebuild should not be that expensive.  Cottman Transmissions is a good bet as I have had bad luck with the rest.  Let me know how it goes.
