Pontiac Repair: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, intake manifold gasket, pontiac grand prix

Question
May 2009 we had the intake valve replaced on our 2002 Grand Prix, along with other hoses, belts, etc.  Now months later, a loud knocking sound started.  We've been told a rod is going out, and need a new engine.  We also heard others say that once they replaced the intake valve, their car had the same problem.  Then, the car started making a ticking sound, and finally quit.  Now we're told it could be the timing chain/belt?  Have you ever heard of this happening?  Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Debi:

Yes I have heard of this happening. If the intake manifold gasket was leaking for an extended amount of time before it was replaced it more then likely started the chain of events that caused the demise of the of the engine. The inatke manifold gaskets leak coolant into the engine crank case and the water that's mixed with the antifreeze doesn't mix with oil and causes the oil to break down and can actually start to rust the internal engine pieces. From the sounds of it it sounds pretty bad and it's going to need a rebuild or a exchange used engine put in this. So to answer your question this does happen but not all that often. Good luck :)
