Pontiac Repair: Tech Question, gas gauge, pontiac grand am

Question
I own a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am V6. One day all the gages in the car stopped working. A friend told me it was the computer in the car. He pulled out the old computer and put it back in. Now When you start the car, it will run for about a min and shut off. Can you help me.

Answer
Hey Tony:

What computer was unplugged the engine control computer? or what? do the gauges still not work when the car does run? is there any warning lights comming on when it does run like service engine soon or security? If you have a scan tool are ther any codes in any of the modules. If soi that would be a place to start looking. I really don't have a lgical explanation as to what the gauges problem and not the not running have in common other than the engine control computer sends a signal to the instermnt panel for the gas gauge and the tac and water temp. If that compuet was going bad it may have caused the gauges issue and when it was unplugged and plugged back in not it's really gone bad and it will not run.... I'm not really sure it have me a bit puzzled. If you give me a bit more insight I may be able to help you. good luck :}
