Pontiac Repair: 1993 pontiac Trans sport, pontiac trans sport, crank shaft position sensor

Question
My 93 trans sport starts fine when its cold, it randomly will shut down. There is no pattern as to when it will shut down. Some times it starts right back up, sometimes it takes hours before it will restart. When it shuts down there is no sputter it just stops running. I had the fuel pump tested and it checked out ok, I changed the fuel filter and that didn't help. I suspect there is some electrical problem, maybe the coil, maybe the ignition module? Any idea's of where to start? I hate to dump a lot of money into randomly replacing all these electric gizmo,s and still not have the problem fixed.

Answer
eseHi Raymond:
well it sounds to like an ignition issue or possibly a computer problem. that engine was noted for crank shaft position sensor problems. I would suggest that you get a cheap spark tester at the parts store and check for spark when it quits. that engine has 3 coild so if just one went down the engine would run on 4 cylinders so it would have to be something that affect all 3 the crank sensor is the main trigger for the module. it could be a module as well. with any electrical component heat kills them so when it warms up it effects the component. that engine also had griund wire issues. under the ignition module thare are 1 or 2 bolts withe ground wires on them They had a tendency to corrode or even loosen up over time. the last thing I would go aftr would be the computer I can't remember if that year was a prime candidate for them or not 94-95 had all kids of issues. I think the 93 had a differnt module. these are the things I would look at first. Your looking at it right as well this is a 15 year old van and it's not worth much now so weigh you options before you dump a lot of $ into it. good luck :}
