Pontiac Repair: Overheating, pontiac dealer, radiator fan

Question
My daughters 1996 Sunfire is overheating when she has to sit in traffic.  We have had it at the shop (non-Pontiac) and they replaced a relay that they thought might be causing the radiator fan working to operate sporadically and at improper times.  This did not work.  The fan runs, but it still overheats.  They also have been fighting a freon leak that they cannot find.  They are now thinking that the leak may be in the evaporator inside the dash and they say to repair it would be prohibitive.  They also rigged a temporary "jumper" to keep the fan running and now some of the warning lights on the dash are on constantly.  Any ideas on repair?  If not, what do you suggest?  Sell it?  Take it to Pontiac?  I believe that the book on it is less than a $1000.  Perhaps trade it in?  Help with any information that you can.  Thank you.

Answer
Your best bet would be to have it diagnosed properly at a pontiac dealer.
You could have a thermostat that is stuck closed or a restricted radiator causing the overheating condition. The AC problem would most likely be the evaporator core leaking, but the AC will not work if the engine is overheating. Have the overheating problem checked out 1st and then decide if it is worth fixing.
