Porsche Repair: A/C, targa top, flange

Question
Hi, I am a very happy new owner of a 1986 911 targa and also a neophyte.  It was quite an impulsive purchase, but ever since high school driving in my friend's father's 1978 turbo sc, I've known I would have one someday. My question involves the a/c and belt.  I noticed (after I bought the car unfortunately) the cover plate is loose (rubber flange appears to have melted).  Can I simply remove the belt to the compressor and not utilize the a/c, or will that screw things up?  Thanks so much.

Answer
Congratulations on your Porsche purchase. It will take a while to not look back after you park it.

Removing the AC belt is fine and will not hurt anything. These cars are best with the windows down and the Targa top off.

Regards

Brad
