RV Repair: hot water heater, hot water tank, hot water heater

Question
I have a 1999 keystone cougar camper I need the hot water heater lighting instructions please. thank you

Answer
The hot water heater may have an automatic ignition, or it may have a pilot you need to light.  Most have a pilot.  The first thing to consider is dirt or spider eggs in the gas line.  This happens from sitting during the non camping months.  If you have this situation, the pilot will have problems lighting due to no gas flow.

The next thing to consider is the propane level in your tanks.  If you are low or empty, the pilot will not light.

To light a pilot, first you turn on the propane tank.  Then you usually have to wait a short while for the lines to fill.  Once you have waited a few minutes, you light the heater much the same way you light the hot water tank in your house.  However, if you don't have an automatic ignitor, you need to use a long match or those new ignitors they sell to light the pilot, as you hold down the black knob on the gas valve, in the pilot position.

Good luck
