RV Repair: Roof - 91 Country Coach Concept, elbow grease, wear gloves

Question
Hello Thom:
I own the above RV, which as you can see has some years on it.  It is still in beautiful shape and I plan on keeping it for many more years.  The roof needs major attention.  I have problems with leaks, all caulking etc. has dried up and and when I walk on it (I assume it is a fibre glass surface) I hear it cracking.  I can see cracks which I assume are in the gel coat.  I am ready to do a complete repair on the roof, either myself or through a professional, but do not know how to approach it.  I would like to get your expertise on the subject.  There is a beautiful Lewmar hatch that is leaking and I suspect it needs a new seal.  If this was your RV how would you approach it?

Thanks and I look forward to your response.

Answer
HI ROB
WITH ANY ROOF, OF AGE, THE FIRST IS TO PREP AND CLEAN.
REMOVE AS MUCH OF THE OLD SEALANT AS YOU CAN. NEVER PUT A NEW BAND AIDE OVER AND OLD BAND AIDE.
WEAR GLOVES AND BRING A CAN OF ELBOW GREASE. NOW YOU HAVE TWO CHOICES DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER IN YOUR AREA, OIL BASED PRODUCTS OR WATER BASED SEALANT. THE LATER,HAVING ITS OWN WEATHER RELATED PROBLEMS..WON'T CURE IN THE COLD OR RAIN.
WITH CRACKS IN THE GEL COAT (IF THE WEATHER WAS WARM AND DRY) YOU COULD USE A ROLLER AND ROLL OUT THE WHOLE ROOF WITH A LATEX SEALANT. BUT THOSE GEL COAT CRACKS REALLY DON'T LET IN WATER UNLESS THEY GO ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
I'D GO WITH PLASTICOAT (OIL BASED) AND APPLY IT TO THE BASES OF THE VENTS AND FRONT AND REAR CAP AREAS, USING PLENTY OF COMMON SENSE AND NOT TOO MUCH SEALANT. IF THE CRACKS IN THE GLASS NEED IT, COAT THEM TOO.
