RV Repair: RV AC Coleman Mach, max amps, honda 2000i

Question
I connect a Honda 2000i portable generator to my Coleman RV AC. It runs for three-four minutes and then the circuit overlaod in the generator goes on and shuts down the AC. Does this indicate I don't have enough power to run the AC or is it a compressor problem. The compressor is hot to touch when it shuts off. The fan works and the refrigerant run cool for the time the AC is on.

Answer
Hi Robert:

Im sorry to have to tell you this, but your generator is too small to run the air conditioner. The reason it run the unit initially and then shuts down after a couple of minutes is because when the compressor initially starts up, the amperage is at its lowest point, as it continues to run and the condenser pressure builds to normal operating pressure, the amperage increases to a point beyond the generator capacity. The maximum aperage of your generator is around 16.7 max amps. The average run amps is 13.3, which is well below what you need.

Here is the link for the honda specification page: www.hondapowerequipment.com

Below is a sectiion of the specifications:
EU2000i SPECIFICATIONS
Engine 3.5 HP, Single Cylinder, Overhead Cam, Air Cooled
Displacement 98.5 cc
AC Output 120V
2000W max.(16.7A)
1600W rated (13.3A)
Receptacles 20A 125V Duplex
NEMA Plug Number:
5-20P
I would not attempt to run this A/C unit on this generator, as serious problems may occur.

Robert, I hope this info helps you.  Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Regards, Larry
