Land Rover Repair: Range Rover EAS System, eas system, rear spring

Question
Hi Attila,
I have a 1997 Range Rover 4.6 HSE. I sense that my EAS system is in danger of failing! Lately, after I turn it off, I hear air coming out of my truck and then it drops all the way down (access mode). Most times it rises back up within a minute when I start it, but sometimes it can take a while (up to 20 minutes). No fault lights come on but if its something I can fix before it completely fails, that would be great...unless it costs a fortune!

Answer
So, this is the main problem with these cars. The air springs are getting old, and they loosing air pressure. You have to know these are cylindrical rubber springs, which turns back under ownselves. And there use to cracked. Not a big crack, rather lot more smallers. And when you go out of the car when it's at that position turned back, that will loose the pressure quickly. And when you starts, the compressor must make much more pressurized air to the reservoir, so that is very very overloaded.

These problem come forward generously after 7-8 years (irrespectively of runned kilometres).

So, you should check the springs when the vehicle is on normal height, and if you see deep crackings you'd better to change those, before they kills the compressor.

I think the 2 rear spring must be very porous, and the front  two are less. I think you have to change at least the two rear springs, but if you want to hold the car for years you should change all four springs. It will cheaper than the contant problems.

You should know if the compressor cannot raise the car sensibly in a short period it will blocking the EAS system, and the car will lowered to deepest position, and you cant go home (unless it's in near). Then It will absolutely unserviceable until you take that into a Land Rover workshop, where they will nothing to do, just clear the fault from the memory (some false fault code will stored, not true) and it will be working again to the next time.

I know It will not cheap (1 spring costs about 250-300 USD), but trust me, you will spare yourself very much angry, and lot of money (if the compressor smashed), and finally you have to change that anyway...
