RV Repair: Hot Water Tank Replacement, hot water tank, gas water heater

Question
I have a 27 foot trailer that has a 6 gallon atwood water heater in it. The aluminum tank ruptured and the service guy said it could not be fixed, the tank had to be replaced. Being a very frugal person, I opted to save some money on labour and install the new tank myself. I now have the new tank and I want to install it which does not seem too difficult as I am somewhat mechanically inclined. My issue is that the instructions provided, although very instructional and thorough, do not mention what type of sealants & caulking is to be used. The info on the tank is as follows:  Atwood G6A-8E Electronic Ignition Gas Water heater, 6 gallon capacity. The tank is original in a 2005 27 ft Surveyor Travel Trailer. Any help at all would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Mike:
Sounds like you have it pretty well under control, good for you! I use a pipe dope for the fittings. Teflon tape works as well. I always put brass fittings in the tank rather than plastic because those split often. There will, over time, be some corrosion because of the different metals involved but it will not cause any problems.
