RV Repair: Awning arm replacement, dave gosse, cotter pin

Question
The lower rear awning arm of the Carefree awning on the my 24 foot Jayco Kiwi was bent as I was taking the awning down in high winds. I have the replacement arms, both top and bottom, and I know I must be concerned about the spring as I remove the top arm. What advice can you give to me about how to go about keeping the spring intact as I replace the arms.

I very much appreciate your time in answering my question. Thank you so much.

Answer
Dave,
You have two choices here.  You can either insert a large cotter pin or something similar through the spring.  You should be able to see the holes on either side of the tube and you just have to turn the awning until the hole in the spring lines up with them.  Or you can hold the end cap of the spring tightly with vise grips clamped to it.  The first method would be preferable and safer.  I hope this helps, good luck and happy camping.
