RV Repair: Fix fan for air conditioner, air filter assembly, layton travel trailer

Question
Hi Darren,

I have a 1996 26 foot Layton travel trailer with an in roof ducted Duo-Therm AC.  The AC seems to work (it gets cold), but fan buzzes and no air can be felt coming out of the ducts.  I'm guessing the fan motor is blocked or frozen.  Where is the fan and how do I get to it?  Any advice?

Thanks for the help!  Jim

Answer
Hi Jim,
The fan motor on your A/C unit has a shaft coming out of each end.  On the shaft that you can access from the inside after removing the return air filter assembly there is a squirrel cage that forces the air through the duct work.  On the other end of the motor you can access that shaft by removing the A/C shroud from the roof.  You should have about 10-15 screws around the base of the shroud.  On that shaft there is a fan blade that blows on the condenser coil to cool it off.  To remove the motor for replacement you will also gain access from the roof.  My best guess is a mud daubers nest or wasp nest in the condenser fan, or a bad motor.  After you check for blockage, if you don't find any, you will need the model #, serial #, and product # of the A/C to check on the price and availability of a new motor.  I hope this helps.
