Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mower will not start, engine model type, soleniod

I have a 1973 sears ss16 and cannot get it to crank.  It was running fine and then it would click when you would turn the switch.  I replaced the battery, the soleniod, and the switch.  Still when I turn the switch it does nothing.  Do you know what I may need to do next....

Will the starter turn the engine if you remove the spark plug?  

What engine do you have?  Briggs, Tecumseh, Kohler?  What is the engine model, type and code number of the engine?

Have you checked the starter pinion to make sure it is not binding?
