Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snapper Walk-Behind Transmission INOP, pinion gears, differential gear

Question
Snapper model P216012 transmission failed last fall and during the winter I disassembled it and began trouble-shooting.  Findings were: input gear(7050767) turns but does not engage differential gear(7012495), input gear bearing(7011767) badly worn and fell out of seat but all teeth on all gears are intact and in excellent condition.

I reassembled with new input gear bearing and noted it did NOT fit tightly in seat, relubed with Snapper grease and reinstalled.  No improvement noted!  FYI, the mechanic at the local shop where I get parts told me I should do the repair because his labor rates would preclude economical repair or I could purchase a complete new transmission assembly(7053945).  Comments/suggestions?  Thanks, Bill

>>How Loose was this Bearing in the Housing?
>>A Small Amount of Play between the Housing and the Outer Race of the Bearing will cause the Input Shaft to Jump the Teeth when under a Load.
