Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): battery not charging, charging battery lawn mower parts lawnmower discountonlineparts discount volts AC voltage

Question
I have a sears lawn garden tractor model 917.273090 it has a kohler twin 22horse power motor in it. I know how to use my volt meter. How do you check the rectifier on it to see if it is working correctly?

Answer
Hi Ronnie, take the multimeter and put it on DC volts.  With the black lead to ground, put the red lead on the small red wire going to the top of the solenoid (where the red battery cable is attached). Start engine, disconnect battery and check voltage at small wire to solenoid. If it reads at least 12 volts the engine charging system is good. So you have a battery problem. If no voltage at small wire then check where it attaches to ignition switch, if good voltage is coming to switch, then the switch is bad and should be replaced. If no voltage is getting to switch, then the regulator is suspect. Check the voltage coming out from under engine housing wires, It will be AC voltage. If voltage is good, then the regulator is bad and should be replaced.
