Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mower shut off when hot, test plug, occaisionally

Question
I have a john deere 260 with a FD501-v 16hp engine. The motor crank and run good until it hot and shut off and want crank, after it sit for about 25 minute it crank back up and run until hot again shut off.

Answer
Just for clarity, you say that after it shuts off, and then won't "crank", you mean that the starter will crank the engine over, but that it won't start/run?

If that is the case, I would suggest that you need to check and adjust your valves, which is something that should be done occaisionally, and costs nothing.
Also, when it stops, have a good spare spark plug in your pocket that you can plug onto the plug wire and test for spark, that would tell you if the ignition was the problem or not.
Try the plug test first, and let me know what you find.
Make sure the outside metal of your test plug is touching the metal
of the engine when testing.
