Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): ELECTRIC CHAIN SAW, gauge wire, electrical motor

Question
SIR:
I AM ABOUT TO PURCHASE A ELECTRIC CHAIN SAW. I THINK THE INSTRUCTIONS SAY DO NOT USE OVER A 50 FT. LONG CORD. HOW EVER I READ IN CUSTOMERS REVIEWS OF THIS SAW, WHERE A CUSTOMER USED IT WITH A 100 FT. CORD WITH NO PROBLEM AT ALL. I WAS WANTING TO USE IT WITH ABOUT 125 FT. CORD. NOT TO CUT A FULL SIZE TREE DOWN , JUST ON BRANCHES UT TO 8 IN. IN DIA. THE SAW IS 13 AMPS 4 HP. I KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO SAY FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION BOOK. HOWEVER, WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF I USED A 125 FT. CORD? ABOUT A 14 OR 12.3 THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Answer
Hello Troy:

>>If you are Going to be Over the 100 ft that is Suggested, then I Suggest you Use a Heavier Gauge Wire Extension than is Suggested.
>>For Electrical Products that are a Long Way from the Power Source and you are having to Use an Extension Cord, I Suggest Using a 10/3 Gauge Wire Extension.
>>Using a 12/3 or 14/3 Gauge Extension Wire for Anything Over 50 ft Causes the Electrical Motor to Overheat Slightly and Damages the Electrical Motor Over Time.
>>The Heavier the Gauge Wire the Better the Current Transfer is and the Cooler the Electrical Motor will Run.
>>The Larger Size Extension Wire May Cost More, but it will Supply the Electrical Unit with the Proper Voltage and Amperage Required for the Unit to Run Properly and Not Damage the Electric Motor.
>>A 12/3 or a 14/3 Gauge Wire is Not Heavy Enough for a 100 ft Lead. >>A Minimum 10/3 Gauge Wire is Suggested for Any Length Over 50 ft and for the Size Electrical Motor you Described; it should be Good to 125 ft with Little to No Worries About Damaging the Electrical Motor.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
