Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cold engine hard to start!!!!!!!, compression stroke, cold engine

I am asking about a Briggs 18hp engine model #917.272751. battery and starter are good.When engine rotates to compression stroke it stops. When engine is warm it starts fine.Any suggestions?

thanks for the model number of the sears tractor, could you get me a little bit more information please and i can help you further.  On the engine there is an identification tag, or the numbers are stamped in the blower housing near the spark plug I need the MODEL, TYPE and CODE number of this engine.  

The Sears IPL shows me a single cylinder L Head engine,  Do you have a Twin Cylinder?  Is it OHV technology or L Head? No worries if you dont know...get me the number off the engine and I can help you further.

your Symptoms describe a problem that could be as simple as a valve adjustment, or as complex as a starter replacement or camshaft problem. This is why i need the Engine information.
