Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 6hp Briggs & Straton engine, briggs straton engine, engine numbers

Question
QUESTION: I an having a problem starting my lawnmower, when I try to start it I smell gas. I was told my float may be stuck. How do I fix this problem.

ANSWER: Without any more information all I can suggest is that you make sure you have FRESH gas from the pump, and if your float is stuck-aka dirt in the needle you need to disassemble the carb and clean it.

It is simply cleaned by removing the carb from the engine, disassembling the carb and spraying carb cleaner to remove the dirt and foreign material.

Be sure to clean fuel tank at the same time too. We don't want any dirt that is in the tank to enter your clean carb.

Is this the first start up of the season?  IF so and you left gas in it over the winter you can first try be removing the fuel and try by putting fresh fuel in it and seeing if it will start.

It may have gummed up the carb and that will necessitate a carb cleaning.

Happy tinkering

QUESTION: I'm an amateur when it comes to engines. How do I take the carburetor off the engine?

Answer
Please get me the MODEL TYPE AND CODE numbers off the engine and I can walk you through this.  The engine numbers are either attached to a sticker on the engine or stamped in the blower housing or valve cover.

I will need this info so i can look at a picture first.

Thanks
