Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 17 hp B&S leaking oil, murray riding mower, crankcase breather

Question
I have a '99 Murray riding mower with a 17 hp twin cylinder b&s model 42a707 type 2653 e1 that leaks oil only while running. I removed the engine and it appears that the oil is coming out somewhere above the crankcase base on one side. Could it be as simple as the crankcase gasket that needs replacing? The engine runs as good as it ever has, it justs drips oil pretty badly.

Answer
Hello Mitch:

Yes it can Simply be the Oil Pan/Sump Gasket Requires Replacing. If you are Going to Remove the Engine from the Frame and Replace the Oil Pan/Sump Gasket, then I Suggest you Replace the Crankcase Breather/Valve Cover Gaskets Also. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Example: 42A707-2653. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Select Sectional Index. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
