Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman tiller transmission, craftsman 917, craftsman rear tine tiller

Question
I have a Craftsman rear tine tiller purchased in the 1990's that has sat in the weather for quit a few years. It burned up the original engine, spitting sparks after a parts delay from Sears, and this spring, I replaced the engine and tried to get the tiller back in service.

The wheels were frozen on the axle originally, and I needed to remove them anyway to replace the tires, clean it up, etc. I needed to use a wheel puller to remove them, and now the wheels are free-rotating, even when in gear, so I have done something to it internally I suppose. The tines operate properly when in the till-and-run-forward gear. This is a Craftsman 917-295550 tiller. The wheels just never drive the tiller.

How difficult is it to tear one of these transmissions down? I have some knowledge of engines, etc, as I used to rebuild VWs and the like, but do I need any special tools? What type of lubricant do I put in it after finishing? I have the exploded view of the transmission.

Thanks for any help.

Answer
Hello Steve:

Is the Drive Shaft for the Wheels Turning? What Holds the Wneel to the Shaft? If you have a Breakdown/IPL, then you Should Not have Much of a Problem Disassembling the Transmission and Locating the Cause. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
