Hi Allen I had the fuel shut off solenoid burn up when operating mower. I replaced the solenoid and the engine started right up but now it smokes black & misses and has no power. It acts like choke is partialy closed off. But choke butterfly is wide open. I am thinking the carb is messed up somehow. I don't see how it could be the fuel shut off solenoid
I replaced.I pulled the spark plug and it was fouled.I put new one in and mower ran a couple of minutes like it used to then started loading up againand smokeing black. thanks
Answer -
Dale- short answer is that the engine is being flooded with gas.  If you could reply with the mower brand and model # of the engine I could provide better info, but flooding is you're no.1 problem.  NOTE! Check your engine oil for gas contamination- change it if it smells like gas or seems too thin.   Additional info. MTD mower Model 690, engine is  Teccumseh model ohv17 204605a engine family stp490u1g2ra, displacement 490. Oil does not smell like gas and and looks ok. thanks again.

Answer
Dale- several things to check- 1- make sure you have the right spark plug, the OHV engines use a hotter (Taller) plug. 2- Make sure you haven't overfilled the crankcase with oil (will adversely affect your impulse fuel pump). 3- If you have a running mixture adjustment screw, turn it in (clockwise) while running, see if the smoke clears.  Let me know the results of these tests!  Good Luck! :)
