Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Repairing Pull Cord, strange noise, recoil

Question
Hello Michael,
I am wondering if you think it would be more expensive to have someone repair the pull-cord on my very old, but good, lawnmower. I was using it this weekend and after about 1 minute, there was a strange noise, then the engine sounded like something was loose, so I turned it off. I looked underneath for obstruction (none) and then I couldn't restart it because the pull-cord wouldn't pull out. Do you think the cost of repairing it would be more then just buying a newer one?
Thank you!

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,

It's hard to say if you would only need recoil work or more.  The recoil might cost between $50 and $75.  Repairing any older piece of equipment is a gamble and the risk depends on how much trouble free life there is left in it.

Good luck,
Michael
